Campus Printing and Computing Resources

Printing and Computing Clusters

STC helps support and maintain a large number of printing and computing clusters across campus (31 locations in total as of spring 2024!). Printers and computers are available at or near most university-owned buildings on central campus in New Haven. STC’s cluster technician program (CTs for short) staff and support clusters in each residential college, around Hillhouse and Science Hill, and the printers in Bass Library and the Sterling Nave and Music Library. Our CTs work closely with our colleagues at BluePrint and ITS to ensure that these vital student resources remain functional throughout the year, from move-in to finals!

To print from your laptop or a public cluster computer, you need to have funds in a BluePrint (powered by PaperCut) account. To learn how and for more information, visit BluePrint’s “Student Printing” page . You will need to be on a Yale Wi-Fi network or the VPN to access the site!

For quick and easy printing, it is recommended that users utilize the PaperCut Webprint service to upload their documents online. For more complex or larger print jobs, users can install the PaperCut Client on their personal laptop or mobile device (available on MacOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android!).

Please note that you must be signed into the YaleSecure Wi-Fi network or utilize the Yale VPN to access the PaperCut Webprint site or to download the PaperCut Client. Visit STC’s on-campus services and support page for information on connecting to the network/VPN!

The desktop computers in the public computing clusters and classrooms around campus are available for use to all members of the Yale Community. Simply sign in with your Yale email and password!

However, we do recommend that you save all of your work to OneDrive so that it is available to you when you log out of the computer, especially since we cannot guarantee that your data will be retained on the computer when you sign out. This also means you can more easily work on your files on any of the computers across campus!

Most of our computers are Windows PCs, but some of our locations do have Macs if you prefer Apple’s desktop computing operating system.

The MyApps service is maintained by Yale ITS and provides a virtual Windows desktop that is available to all faculty and students. Users can access various licensed software and Yale resources via MyApps without needing to download them on their own computer. The best part is that you can use MyApps from anywhere! Pretty neat, right?

Users can access these virtual desktops by simply logging into myapps.yale.edu or downloading the Windows Remote Desktop Client from Yale OnTheHub. Users will use their Yale email and password to login into the virtual desktop of their choosing.

Once signed in, the user can utilize the virtual desktop just like they would one of our cluster computers! It works on MacOS and Windows PCs and doesn’t require the Yale VPN to function! We typically recommend MyApps to users that may want to utilize more demanding software (such as statistical analysis or modeling programs) that their computer may not be able to run or have space to install. However, just as when using our cluster computers, please ensure that you save all of your work and files to OneDrive as we cannot guarantee that your data will be retained on the virtual desktop since these machines are wiped periodically.
