About Student Technology Collaborative

Learn about the STC and how we help

STC Info

STC has been supporting the Yale community since 1985! We began as the Computing Assistants dating back to Project Eli, which hired 15 student workers to maintain the AppleTalk Network and later the computers placed in the Residential Colleges.

We have officially had the name Student Technology Collaborative since August 2007 and continue to be one of the largest student employers on campus today!

Student Techs

Student Techs (STs) help other Yale College undergraduates and GSAS students with technology issues. Assistance is available via phone, chat, and at our walk-in centers

STs troubleshoot any issues, provide advice, and repair personal computers. STC services are free; however, students may be asked to purchase parts and software if necessary to complete a repair. For students whose computers are taken in for repair, the Student Technology program maintains a stock of loaner laptops separate from what the Bass Circulation Desk has available. STC loaner laptops are subject to availability constraints, and failure to comply with listed terms of service may result in fines.

Certain problems are outside of the STs’ purview. Professional school students are encouraged to reach out to their school’s dedicated IT support team prior to seeking help from STC. Yale-owned computers should be referred to their department’s respective Distributed Support Provider (DSP). Any device accessing HIPAA, FERPA, or otherwise protected data should be handled by a specialized support center rather than STC.

The student technician branch is also responsible for administering the YCDO Loaner Program and OnTheHub.

Media Techs

Media Techs (MTs) are a network of students dedicated to the use and education of digital media across campus. If you are in need of rental equipment or instruction on how to operate cameras, lighting kits, audio recorders, or more, we can help with that! MTs working within STC Studios will also fulfill graphic design requests from members of the Yale community.

Cluster Techs

The CT Program is responsible for staffing and maintaining a number of the computing and printing clusters around campus. We maintain clusters in each residential college, public clusters around Hillhouse and Science Hill, and the printers in Bass Library and Sterling Library. Cluster Techs on shift are responsible for checking each cluster, restocking paper and ink for printers, troubleshooting printer problems, and ensuring that cluster computers are working without issue. The CT program makes sure that these vital student resources remain functional throughout the year, from move-in to finals!

Cluster Techs can be found across Yale campus, but we have assembled a map of locations we support.

Need help or support with a printer at one of the locations our CTs service? They can be reached by emailing cluster.support@yale.edu!
